In March of 1983, TJ Western was taken prisoner by the El Salvadoran government agency that was associated with death squad activities and murders. It was fortunate that a friend and NBC reporter, Joan Ambrose Newton, was present in TJ's apartment the morning four agents of the Treasury Police arrived drunk at his door, flashing expired government ID's and demanding that TJ accompany them to "headquarters." He refused to go and argued with them while Newton called fellow journalists from the Miami Herald and New York Times. Sam Dillon, Miami Herald reporter, arrived quickly and began to interview the plain clothed "police." TJ may have been spared the fate of many death squad victims because of the presence of Newton and Dillon and their witnessing his detention. |
